Crowdfunding Success: a snapshot of our upcoming fundraising training

Looking to expand your fundraising reach and build a community around your cause? We’re excited to share a preview of our upcoming Crowdfunding Training, designed to help local organisations harness the power of online community fundraising. Here’s a snapshot of what we’ll be covering, starting with the fundamental question: is crowdfunding right for your charity?

What makes crowdfunding different?

Crowdfunding isn’t just another way to ask for money – it’s about building a movement. When Captain Sir Tom Moore walked laps of his garden during lockdown, he wasn’t just fundraising; he was creating a story that millions of people wanted to be part of. His campaign raised over £33 million because it gave people hope and a way to contribute to something bigger than themselves.

The key insight? Crowdfunding works when people feel they’re joining a cause, not just making a donation.

Is your project ready for crowdfunding?

Before you launch into the world of online campaigns, you need to honestly assess whether your project is crowdfunding-ready. In our training, we’ll walk through a simple five-question checklist that could save you weeks of effort:

  • Is your project clearly defined? Vague appeals for ‘general funds’ rarely succeed. Crowdfunding thrives on specific, tangible projects that people can visualise and understand.
  • Do you have a network ready to support you? Everyone wants to back a winning horse. Your friends, family, and existing supporters need to be your first donors; their early contributions signal to strangers that your cause is worth supporting.
  • Does your cause have mass-market appeal? You might be passionate about your work, but will it resonate with people outside your immediate circle? Sometimes a little market research can save a lot of disappointment.
  • Can you commit to ongoing social media engagement? A successful crowdfunding campaign isn’t a ‘set it and forget it’ exercise. You’ll need to create content, engage with supporters, and maintain momentum throughout your campaign.
  • Have you planned for all three stages? The before, during, and after phases all require different strategies and energy. Many campaigns fail because they only plan for the launch.

The power of perfect messaging

Once you’ve confirmed your project is ready, the magic happens in your messaging. We’ll teach you to answer three critical questions that form the foundation of any successful campaign:

  • What are your three core values? (Keep them to one word each if possible)
  • Who is your audience?
  • Why should they support you?

Choosing the right platform

Not all crowdfunding platforms offer the same tools and reach, so it pays to think through which platform would work best for your project. For example, if you’re a small Surrey-based charity running a community project, Localgiving’s focus on local causes and Gift Aid support might serve you better than a global platform designed for personal appeals. In our training, we’ll break down the key players, helping you select the platform that aligns with your goals, audience, and budget.

Keeping up momentum

Here’s where many campaigns falter: they create a great launch, then struggle to maintain interest for 30+ days. We’ll show you how to plan a four-week campaign that builds momentum rather than losing it.

Each week requires different content, different energy, and different tactics—but when done right, your supporters will feel like they’re on a journey with you rather than being repeatedly asked for money.

The AI advantage

Here’s something that would have been impossible just a few years ago: artificial intelligence can now be your campaign assistant. We’ll explore practical ways to use AI tools for content creation, social media planning, donor personalisation, and post-campaign follow-up.

What happens after success?

The campaign ends, you’ve hit your target—now what? The most successful crowdfunding campaigns aren’t one-off events; they’re the beginning of longer relationships with new supporters. We’ll teach you how to transform one-time donors into ongoing advocates, volunteers, and ambassadors for your cause.

This includes practical strategies for thanking donors, reporting impact transparently, and creating opportunities for continued engagement. Because the real prize isn’t just the money you raise—it’s the community you build along the way.
