Do you want to make a difference by helping people to reduce household expenses and environmental damage as part of an international movement? Then come and join Banstead Repair Café to make repairs local for all those in and around the area. We are happy to work with interested people on timing and commitment level etc.

Repair Café use community repair skills to help people repair and reuse their stuff, without charge, to reduce household costs and reduce waste. Benefits of the movement include:

  • Reducing the environmental impact of waste and recycling
  • Reducing cost of living by making products last longer
  • Bringing back repair into local society
  • Maintaining and spreading repair expertise
  • Promoting social cohesion in the community by connecting people

Banstead Repair Café opened in May 2024 and operates as a service provided by Age Concern Banstead, a registered charity. We currently hold monthly repair sessions on the first Saturday of the month and we wish to grow the Café by building communication with local communities. The role is to devise and implement a communication plan to progressively engage local organisations with overlapping interests, particularly those focused on cost of living, environmental and social development goals, so that we can grow both the volunteer and client base. Longer term, the plan will need to engage members to maintain momentum and perhaps consider how we can support community education on related policy matters.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify local media opportunities and implement a communications plan for promoting further volunteering, and for people to make use of the repair sessions. Channels could include local newspapers, church and charity newsletters, magazines, radio stations and social media accounts.
  • Devise simple methods for getting feedback on the effectiveness of different parts of the communication plan to guide future efforts.
  • Make recommendations on how to use resources available from allied organisations to communicate with stakeholders about the wider repair and reuse agenda.

What skills do I need?

  • A strong communicator with excellent spoken and written English
  • Excellent organisational skills with accuracy and an eye for detail
  • The ability to think creatively and look at problems from a new perspective
  • The ability to relate to people of all ages and backgrounds
  • Proficiency in digital communications & traditional media
  • Knowledge of data analysis and how to translate that into improved communications
  • An eye for creative marketing opportunities and a flair for content creation.

Banstead Repair Café currently operates two, two hour sessions between 10am and 2pm on the first Saturday of the month, 12 months per year, in The Horseshoe, Banstead. As we grow, we will add extra sessions. The Communications Lead will need to attend these sessions periodically to understand our work and to engage with fellow volunteers.
