Macmillan Butterfly Centre at Epsom & St. Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust
Our information and support centre offers complementary therapies to cancer patients and their relatives, free of charge. This rewarding role makes a real difference to people during very stressful times in their lives. The volunteer complementary therapist is not directly involved with the client’s treatment or care but may influence their physical and emotional wellbeing. The role may also help to contribute towards CPD requirements for the therapist.
Summary of some of the duties

Provide a specific
complementary therapy to clients of the Macmillan Butterfly Centre
· Practise the therapy in a competent, safe and hygienic manner, in accordance with the Centres’
guidelines and the therapist’s own professional body
· Be aware of the patient’s diagnosis, treatment and current condition
· Take account of contra-indications or precautions in relation to the therapy
and adapt the treatment accordingly
· Maintain accurate records according to the treatment plan
· Follow the Volunteers’ Policy and the Complementary Therapy Policy and Guidelines
· Maintain confidentiality at all times
All volunteer complementary therapists are required to:
· Provide evidence of relevant training, qualifications and insurance
· Be a member of a relevant professional association
· Register with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (regulatory body)
· Demonstrate a sound understanding of the particular therapy they are qualified to practice
· Have a Disclosure and Baring (DBS) check before starting the voluntary role
· Have at least 1 years’ post qualification experience of working with clients
· Commit to the voluntary role for a minimum of at least 18 – 24months where possible
· Participate in initial induction training and attend Trust mandatory training as required, some will be annually.
On line training can be completed during Covid 19 pandemic
· Comply with all Epsom & St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust guidelines, policies and procedures.
· Complete a three-month probation period

· Have good listening and communication skills
· Be reliable
· Be able to make a regular commitment
· Be polite and helpful
· Be friendly and approachable
· Be flexible
· Understand the boundaries of their specific role

Two sessions a day are split as below 9am – 1pm and 1pm – 5pm Each volunteer will only do 4 hours at a time
