Established in 2006, Merstham Community Facility Trust (MCFT) is a charity that aims to support, connect, and empower the local community. We work with the public and other organisations in a common effort to improve social welfare, health, education, employment and the general quality of life of members of the local community. Based in the vibrant Merstham Hub, MCFT provides a safe, accessible space for individuals to receive inclusive access to provisions and opportunities.

About the volunteer role:

As a Food Waste Volunteer, you will play a vital role in reducing food waste and supporting your local community by redistributing surplus food to those in need. This involves collecting, transporting and sorting food, as well as raising awareness about food waste and sustainability by being part of the community fridge volunteer team.

Activities includes:

  • Collecting surplus food from local supermarkets, bakeries or other food suppliers.
  • Ensuring proper storage and handling of food during transport.
  • Delivering collected food to Merstham Hub Community Fridge.
  • Assisting in display, cleaning and sorting food.
  • Inspecting food items to ensure they are safe and fit for consumption.
  • Organising and storing food donations following hygiene and safety guidelines.
  • Logging details of food collections.

What’s in it for you:

  • Confidence, self-esteem, self-worth, and mental health improvement.
  • A sense of purpose - Pride in helping others while making a difference.
  • Friendships - Supporting and being part of the community.
  • Upskilling – Beneficial in your day to day including your (future) paid work. You will receive training on food safety and handling, and gain experience in logistics, sustainability, and community engagement.
  • Gratitude - Feeling appreciated, thanked, and grounded.

What skills do I need?

  • A passion for sustainability and reducing food waste.
  • Reliable and punctual.
  • Good organisational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
