Established in 2006, Merstham Community Facility Trust (MCFT) is a charity that aims to support, connect, and empower the local community. We work with the public and other organisations in a common effort to improve social welfare, health, education, employment and the general quality of life of members of the local community. Based in the vibrant Merstham Hub, MCFT provides a safe, accessible space for individuals to receive inclusive access to provisions and opportunities.

About the role:

We are looking for volunteers to join the Merstham Movies project. This project is to offer the Merstham Community the ability to enjoy an evening out at the cinema with refreshments for an affordable price, to mix with other people, to chat and make new friends. Merstham Movies currently offer one film a month, often the second Saturday of each month but dates may vary.

Activities includes:

1. Steward: during a film show

Setting up

  • Setting up the cinema: lowering the screen, setting-up the speakers, putting up all the dark room curtains over the various windows and doors to create a dark room, placing the seating in the cinema (plus seating for the Stewards to watch the film).
  • Setting-up the Reception in the Hub Reception area to greet guests and check their attendance and payment.
  • Setting-up the Refreshments under the management of one of the volunteers: having hot water urns full and ready, displaying the cold drinks and “eats” and put up the price list.

Greeting guests:

  • Stewards man the reception and the refreshments to talk to the guests and learn more about them.
  • On the occasions there is allocated seating, there will be Stewards allocated to see guests to their seats.

Intermission:

  • Stewards sell refreshments and mingle with the guests.

Dismantling the Cinema:

  • Refreshment sales are recorded as soon as the film intermission finishes, unsold stock is then returned to the storage area.
  • Returning the cinema back to an empty clean room.

2. Promotion (if you cannot be a steward, you could volunteer with us on the promotion of the project):

  • Distributing posters
  • Doing local leaflet drops
  • Planning
  • Marketing

Newsletter:

  • Assisting in creating a monthly newsletter based around Merstham Movies news - news of upcoming films - quizzes - creating surveys to enhance service, etc.

Website:

  • Managing and updating a proposed Website for Merstham Movies.

What’s in it for you:

  • Confidence, self-esteem, self-worth, and mental health improvement.
  • A sense of purpose - Pride in helping others while making a difference.
  • Friendships - Supporting and being part of the community.
  • Upskilling – Beneficial in your day to day including your (future) paid work.
  • Gratitude - Feeling appreciated, thanked, and grounded.

What skills do I need?

The ideal volunteer will have:

  • Good people skills and be a good listener.
  • Excellent multitasking skills.
  • A positive attitude and is reliable.
  • A non-judgemental attitude.
