Your Sanctuary
Volunteers on our specialist helpline provide essential support to people experiencing domestic abuse. Operating from 9am to 9pm, seven days a week, the helpline offers a range of opportunities for volunteers both during the working week or out of office hours to get involved in:
Answering calls.
Providing immediate listening, emotional and practical support.
Offering confidential, non judgemental information and signposting to other agencies as needed.
Finding refuge accommodation out of our area when needed, accessing 'Routes to Support' and information as appropriate (weekday daytime only).
Keeping up to date with changes in legislation and services offered in the areas relevant to domestic abuse and child protection to ensure that information provided is up-to-date and accurate.
The training requirements will include a period of day-time (Monday to Friday) shadowing on the helpline and, because it is essential that the service we offer to callers is of the highest standard, we only accept volunteers on the helpline who we believe have the skills and ability to cope with the demands of the role. Full training will be provided, but you will need a friendly, calm and empathetic telephone manner with good listening skills. Shift times are 9am to 1pm, 1pm to 5pm and 5pm to 9pm Monday to Sunday and we ask that a volunteer covers at least two shifts per month.
Volunteers will need to be caring and supportive, have good listening skills and be calm and non-judgemental.
Once trained and had some experience, you would take calls from your own home.
