Come make a difference in people’s lives!

Established in 2006, Merstham Community Facility Trust (MCFT) is a charity that aims to support, connect, and empower the local community. We work with the public and other organisations in a common effort to improve social welfare, health, education, employment and the general quality of life of members of the local community. Based in the vibrant Merstham Hub, MCFT provides a safe, accessible space for individuals to receive inclusive access to provisions and opportunities.

About the role:

As a Repair Cafe Volunteer, you will play an essential role in reducing landfill by prolonging the life of items some of which are treasured mementos, and helping saving money for those who need it most. You will be part of a project that has environmental, financial and emotional benefits for our community.

Activities include:

• Set up the space (tools, banner, tea and coffees)

• Repair items

• Clear down

What’s in it for you:

• A sense of purpose - Pride in helping others while making a difference.

• Gratitude - Feeling appreciated, thanked, and grounded.

• Friendships - Supporting and being part of the community.

• Confidence, self-esteem, self-worth, and mental health improvement.

• Upskilling – Free skills training including PAT testing. Beneficial in your day to day life including your (future) paid work. You will gain experience in sustainability, and community engagement too.

What skills do I need?

The ideal volunteer will have:

• Good general DIY repair skills.

• Experience of electrical repairs is a bonus (e.g., hoovers, etc.) but not essential.

• An interest in sustainability and reducing landfill waste.

• Dealing sensitively with “customers” who may have items that have a emotional value.

• People and Communication skills.

• Reliable and punctual.

• Good organisational skills.

• Ability to volunteer independently and a good team player.
