Surrey Care Trust (VSNS)
Surrey Care Trust provides learning, training and mentoring to support young people and adults in improving their chances in life. We are enabling people to overcome the disadvantage of low skills, poor educational achievement, limited opportunities and tough financial circumstances. Nurturing skills for life, work and learning creates brighter futures. Setbacks in life such as illness, addiction, family breakdown and unemployment can also leave people facing hardship and needing to learn new skills and rebuild confidence. We help there, too. Not only do individuals benefit personally from our work, but we believe that the wider community also gains when people are better equipped to make a positive contribution to society.
Swingbridge Tranquility provides cruises and learning experiences for young people, community groups, the elderly and families, particularly those who have limited mobility or other special needs. Cruises take place from April to the end of October. Swingbridge Tranquility is based at Dapdune Wharf, Guildford.
Swingbridge Endeavour is an environmental work boat. Throughout the year they carry out 6 months work on the River Wey and surrounding area and six months on the River Thames. Endeavour provides environmental work to disadvantaged people on a medium and long term basis. We particularly encourage people to get involved who are unemployed, under skilled, sometimes with mild learning difficulties or recovering from serious accidents or addictions. We also work with charitable organisations and the NHS to support people with mental health issues.
In addition to the Activities listed, volunteers with an interest in boat handling and narrowboating would be especially welcome.
What skills do I need?
Volunteering with Swingbridge is an opportunity to learn new skills and then share those with others.
Surrey Care Trust needs people with all sorts of talents to help run Swingbridge: an aptitude for the practical side of boats, an enthusiasm for environmental work and above all the ability to motivate and enthuse others. No experience is necessary however, we welcome those with existing skills to join us. A number of our trainees and some of our volunteers need support from others in the team.
As well as crew members and skippers, we have a team of volunteer trainers, while other volunteers take on responsibility for maintenance or are involved in other behind-the-scenes jobs.
Some people volunteer every week; for others it is a more occasional commitment. Whatever time you have to give, there will be a place for you on Swingbridge Community Boats.
