About VASE

We're embarking on an ambitious journey, bringing together two established organisations - Tandridge Voluntary Action (TVA) and Voluntary Action Reigate and Banstead (VARB) - to create an innovative and more effective support organisation. This merger represents a strategic reimagining of how we serve our communities.

As a trustee, you'll play a crucial role in governance and strategic direction. Working alongside fellow Board members and our staff team, you'll help establish VASE as a cornerstone of voluntary sector support across East Surrey. You'll have the opportunity to shape policy, guide strategic decisions, and ensure we deliver lasting impact across our communities.

About the role

In addition to the generic duties of all trustees, as VASE’s first Treasurer you will be pivotal to the development of many of the organisation’s financial systems, policies and procedures. This will be very much a hands-on role, requiring in the first six months at least 1-2 hours per week of activity and engagement. Thereafter possibly around 4-6 hours a month.

As Treasurer you will be responsible for:

  1. Ensuring that VASE manages and is accountable for its financial resources;
  2. In conjunction with others establishing and developing financial systems, policies and procedures aligned with financial best practice;
  3. In conjunction with others making payments, preparing management and end of year accounts and providing critical oversight and commentary to fellow trustees on VASE’s financial situation;
  4. Working with fundraising leads to support the development of funding applications;
  5. Ensuring, procuring, and scrutinising the management of the organisation’s resources;
  6. Supporting the recruitment and development of staff responsible for financial management;
  7. Leading, defining in conjunction with others the Vision, Mission and Values of VASE;
  8. Overseeing that VASE complies with its regulatory and legal obligations;
  9. Facilitation of and supporting the development of the organisation’s strategy and business plan;
  10. Alongside the staff team and fellow trustees act as an ambassador for VASE and its work;
  11. Spearheading an organisation that is inclusive, supports equity and diversity.

What skills do I need?

  • Ideally you will have experience of acting as a treasurer or working directly with a Board/management community in the voluntary, community or faith sector (VCFS);
  • Be able to understand the legal and regulatory requirements of managing a charity;
  • Be numerate and understand good financial management;
  • Have experience of charity accounting and/or financial management;
  • Have a passion for volunteering and for East Surrey;
  • Have good strategic, business acumen;
  • A commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion in service delivery and the workplace;
  • Have some experience or insight into people management;
  • Be a clear and good strong communicator;
  • Be committed to your own personal and professional development;
  • Sufficient time to devote to executing your duties as a Trustee;
  • Being prepared to lead/be a member of sub-committee(s) tasked with meeting agreed terms of reference.

We're seeking trustees who bring strategic vision, professional expertise, and a deep commitment to community action to work alongside some existing trustees. We value diverse perspectives and experience in areas such as finance, legal, HR, digital transformation, or voluntary sector leadership.
