Schoolreaders (CSVA)
One in four children leave primary school unable to read to the expected standard.
This means they are unable to fully access their secondary education which will have a life-long impact on their opportunities.
Schoolreaders is a national child literacy charity that recruits volunteers to go into local primary schools to listen to children read. We are calling out for more volunteers across Bristol and the surrounding areas.
If you can spare just an hour a week, you could change a child’s life story.
Volunteers visit their matched school once a week for an hour or two during the school day where they work individually with children to help improve their reading ability, their comprehension and also their enjoyment of reading.
Often our volunteers read with children who need extra support or who do not have anyone to read to outside of their classroom.
You do not need to have any specific skills or prior experience but will you need to have a DBS check carried out, at no cost to you as this will be carried out by the school.
You need to commit to staying at your matched school for a full year but holidays can be taken during this time.
Volunteers need to be over 18 and have good level of written and spoken English and of course enjoy spending time with children.

Schoolreaders sessions take place on the school premises during normal academic hours at times that you agree in advance with the school staff. Every school makes its own arrangement with its volunteers, so it should be possible to find a time that suits you.
