Supporting Spelthorne Museum’s development

When Spelthorne Museum learned they needed to relocate from their old library home to the new Staines Library, the trustees knew this was an opportunity to reimagine what their museum could be. But, to achieve their vision, they would need significant investment in new design, equipment, digital access, and display cases.

The Museum initially secured substantial funding from the Community Infrastructure Levy, but the scale of capital expenditure required meant they would benefit from additional support. That’s where VSNS’s Charity Development Manager Lakhbir came in, working alongside the entirely volunteer-run organisation for nearly a year and a half.

While the trustees already had fundraising experience, our role went beyond simply filling in application forms. We worked with them on a successful bid to Your Fund Surrey for additional display cases, encouraging them to be more proactive with their local councillor relationships. The Museum held an event that led to two councillors supporting their application. She then supported a second successful bid to the Community Infrastructure Levy for another substantial amount.

But perhaps the most valuable aspect of Lakhbir’s support was the strategic guidance and accountability she provided through monthly meetings. Acting as a critical friend, we helped keep trustees on track and focused on progress during what could have been an overwhelming period of change.

As Lakhbir explains: “My job was to carry out the research they needed to make sure they included all the local details funders would look for. Working alongside them resulted in increased awareness and resources, so I could leave them in a position where they can say ‘We can do it’.”

That is the outcome VSNS strives for with every voluntary organisation we work with: not just securing the funding they need, but building confidence, knowledge and connections to continue succeeding independently. The trustees at Spelthorne Museum now have the resources to take their reimagined museum forward into its new home.
