The Library of Things (LoT) is a community-led initiative that allows people to borrow useful items instead of buying them—helping to reduce waste, promote sustainability, and make everyday life more affordable. This project is run entirely by volunteers and relies on community support.

We are looking for a Booking & Lending Volunteer (Librarian) to help borrowers check items in and out, manage bookings, and ensure that all items are returned in good condition. If you enjoy working with people, have great attention to detail, and want to support a sustainable community initiative, this is the perfect role for you!

Role Overview

As our Returned Loaned Items Checker you will need to visit Bourne Hall Library for about 30 minutes once a week to check the items that have been returned on time and are still serviceable for reissue removing any items that might require maintenance or PAT testing (to be carried out by others at the Epsom Repair Cafe).

This is a great role for someone who enjoys interacting with the public and helping to create an efficient and welcoming lending service.

Key Responsibilities

· Assist borrowers in checking items in and out of the library.

· Manage booking records, ensuring all loans are properly recorded.

· Monitor due dates and follow up on overdue items when necessary.

· Inspect returned items for damage and notify the Quartermaster if repairs are needed.

· Provide a welcoming and helpful service to borrowers.

· Keep inventory records updated, working closely with the Quartermaster.

What skills do I need?

Skills & Experience (Desirable but Not Essential)

No prior experience is needed—just a willingness to help and learn! However, the following skills would be beneficial:

· Strong attention to detail and good record-keeping abilities.

· Good communication and customer service skills.

· Basic IT or admin skills (training will be provided for any booking systems).

· Interest in sustainability and community projects.

If you enjoy helping people and keeping things organised, this role is a great fit!

What’s in it for You?

· Be part of an exciting and impactful community project.

· Develop skills in administration, customer service, and record-keeping.

· Meet like-minded people and contribute to a sustainable sharing initiative.

· Gain experience in managing a lending system—great for anyone interested in libraries, community work, or admin roles.
