Energy Action Redhill and Reigate Ltd is a not-for-profit community benefit society. Our aims are to reduce the carbon footprint of buildings in East Surrey by improving the energy efficiency of local homes. We are partners in the Surrey-wide HEAT project and are responsible for delivering free home energy surveys in Reigate & Banstead and Tandridge.  We have helped over 500 households to improve the comfort and energy efficiency of their homes and with your help we can support even more.

To help us deliver the HEAT surveys in winter 2025/26 we are expanding our team of volunteer Energy Champions. Working in pairs, our Energy Champions will respond to survey requests. Using our infrared cameras, you will take thermal images of the property to show where heat is escaping. You will also conduct a series of basic checks within the property to identify where residents can improve energy efficiency, cut fuel bill costs and make their homes easier to keep warm.

Many of our surveys will take place in the evening (between 6pm and 9.30pm) so we can get the best thermal images.  However, due to demand we also provide surveys during the day, usually in the morning between 9am and 11am.  Each survey takes between 30 minutes to an hour and we aim to schedule 2-3 surveys in a session (subject to your availability), in the same local area.

EARR offers all our Energy Champions full training for the role. This will include:

  • Introductory training day on 18 October 2025 in Redhill/Reigate or 8 November 2025 in Oxted
  • 2 hour online training course by National Energy Action - flexible timings
  • Induction visit(s) alongside experienced Energy Champions
  • Ongoing support from the Project Coordinator and Energy Champion Network

This is a great opportunity for someone who wants to help people to improve their home environment whilst reducing energy bills.  It is also a great way to help improve the energy efficiency of local homes, which will reduce their carbon footprint and ultimately benefit our living planet.  If this role sounds interesting but you would prefer to act as a supporter then see our Energy Champion Assistant role.   (If you are interested in the role but live in other parts of Surrey, outside Reigate & Banstead and Tandridge, then see Zero Carbon Guildford who are also recruiting.)

What skills do I need?

As an Energy Champion your main role will be to offer suggestions to a wide range of people, primarily in their homes. You will need good communication skills, with a caring and non-judgmental approach.

You will be happy to work flexibly and to use your own initiative. Ideally you will have some basic knowledge of energy saving in the home and/or a willingness to learn. This will be supplemented by our training.

Having your own vehicle, or access to one, is helpful for carrying out home visits and you may be carrying light energy efficiency materials (e.g. draughtproofing) with you. However, do talk to us if you don’t have access to transport and we can arrange for you to work locally or with a volunteer who does.

As you may be dealing with vulnerable people in their own homes, you will also need a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate in order to carry out the role. The DBS check will be arranged by EARR and all results will be confidential and individually considered.
