Watercolour Estate has existed for 14 years and comprises of over 600 flats and houses. Watercolour also benefits from a children's nursery, a vet, a pharmacy, a doctors surgery and a Tesco Express. The nature reserve is also close by offering spectacular walks and views, as well as an array of wildlife. The long-awaited Community Space is slowly but surely becoming a vibrant hub of the development, offering the ability to bring residents together through a variety of classes, private functions, and community-based activities.

Our new Community Space, sitting within the Carrington Place development on the Watercolour Estate in Redhill has now been up & running since June, and a Board of Trustees consisting of mainly residents is actively in place.

We are now looking for a part-time Maintenance Caretaker to join our existing core group of residents and supporters actively involved. The premises are relatively small and have been fitted out very recently, so the level of maintenance required is basic.

What skills do I need?

We are looking for volunteers from a variety of professional backgrounds, with a heart for the community and willingness to proactively get involved by lending their expertise and enthusiasm in looking after the premises.

Specifically, the Maintenance Caretaker role requires someone who is ideally able to perform the majority of the following tasks, but we welcome volunteers with skills in a specific trade:

1. Basic carpentry and repairs

  • Basic repairing of doors, windows, and furniture where possible.
  • Fixing or installing shelves, notice boards, or storage units.
  • Handling small woodworking tasks like replacing skirting boards or door frames.
  • Checking and maintaining locks broken locks or handles.

2. Basic plumbing

  • Fixing leaking taps, toilets, or pipes.
  • Unblocking sinks, drains, or toilets.
  • Checking and maintaining water systems, handling emergencies like burst pipes.

3. Basic electrical maintenance

  • Replacing light bulbs, fuses, and switches.
  • Testing and resetting circuit breakers or RCDs.
  • Understanding basic wiring for minor electrical repairs (complex tasks will be handled by a certified electrician).

4. Basic painting & decorating

  • Touching up walls, doors, and skirting boards.
  • Repainting rooms and common areas to keep the space looking fresh.
  • Handling minor plastering work to fix small holes or cracks.

5. Health & Safety knowledge

  • Identify potential hazards and flagging them to the Trustees promptly.
  • Implementing safety measures, such as installing handrails or safety signs.
  • Understanding how to deal with hazardous materials or spills.
