Talking Tree exists to raise community awareness and action to combat the negative effects of climate change. We believe that millions of little actions by ordinary people, can make a big positive difference for our local area and our planet.

The 'Sewcial' group exists to create a community that will raise awareness of our use of fabric and textiles especially fast fashion impacts, as one of the 2nd largest destroyers of the environment and the disproportionate amount of natural resources it takes up.

The 'Sewcial' group explores ways of mitigating this through repair, re-use and upcycling by giving people the sewing skills they need to create and extend the life of existing clothing and fabric items. We teach people to use sewing machines and hand sewing techniques.

We provide all equipment and materials, although people are free to bring their own projects and materials.

We are a fun, friendly and inclusive group, there is always lots of chat and laughter at our sessions! The group meets on the second Saturday of each month between 10am and 1pm. We are based at the Staines Library Hub.

What skills do I need?

We are looking for volunteers who have a good practical knowledge of sewing, knitting or crafting skills, in particular being able to use a sewing machine and sharing these skills with group members. Perhaps you already make and repair your own clothes and soft furnishings.

No formal qualification is needed.

As important as good skills is an interest in helping the environment, and the ability to communicate and teach others with enthusiasm, kindness, and patience.

We are unable to offer volunteering opportunities to under 18’s.

Recruitment is via informal discussion with Co-ordinator, plus you will be asked to complete a form to provide basic information about yourself, you will also need to confirm you have read the Volunteer handbook.

As a Volunteer you will be working under the supervision of a the Talking Tree co-ordinator.
