you're doing your Duke of Edinburgh’s Award or another award or qualification where you need to earn volunteering hours, you can volunteer at Girlguiding by helping at weekly unit meetings for girls aged 4–14.

Do your volunteering with a Girlguiding unit, in a role that’s fun, flexible and genuinely impactful. Girlguiding units are local groups where children aged 4–14 come together each week to have fun, try new things and make friends, all supported by amazing volunteers.

Each week, you’ll help adult volunteers run fun activities, games, challenges and badges that inspire girls to try new things, work together and build their own confidence. You’ll be a friendly face the girls look forward to seeing, and you’ll have the chance to make sessions more exciting by bringing your own ideas, creativity and energy.

You’ll also have the opportunity to develop practical leadership skills. You’ll learn how to communicate clearly, work as part of a team, manage small groups of girls, and adapt when plans change - skills that are useful not just for DofE or the award you’re doing, but for school, college, work and life more widely.

The adult volunteers in your unit will guide you, make sure you feel comfortable, and help you set goals, so your volunteering feels rewarding from the start. It’s a great way to gain experience, build confidence, and make a positive difference, all while having fun and meeting new people.

Girlguiding units meet in age groups, you can choose where you want to volunteer:

  • Rainbows (4–7): full of energy and imagination.
  • Brownies (7–10): adventurous, creative and always up for a challenge.
  • Guides (10–14): growing independence and brilliant ideas.

What you’ll be doing as a young volunteer

Every unit is different, but you’ll usually:

  • Help run fun activities, games and challenges.
  • Support girls to take part, earn badges and celebrate achievements.
  • Bring girls’ ideas to life - from crafts to campfire creations to community clean ups.
  • Help keep everyone included and have fun.
  • Join in trips, events, adventures or even sleepovers.
  • Share your own interests, skills and creativity with younger girls.

What skills do I need?

No experience needed - you can join us exactly as you are. Whether you’re confident or a bit nervous, we’ll support you from day one. This role is great if you’re kind, curious, open to learning and enjoy being part of a team.
