Would you like to join the board of a local charity whose vision is to improve the lives of older people in Elmbridge? Do you have business experience, an interest in the issues surrounding the elderly living in the UK and a desire to give those who need a helping hand somewhere to go to get help and support?

We are a small charity for older people and have been serving the local community for over 60 years. Our aim is to provide advice, friendship, and support to reduce loneliness and social isolation and alleviate financial hardship.

We consistently achieve remarkable things with minimal resources and are often told we have changed people's lives.  We support those older people in our area who need help with completing the paperwork required to claim the benefits they are entitled to, and we arrange befriending relationships and social events to ensure older people lead full, dignified and independent lives.  We rely on a dedicated team of staff, trustees and volunteers to deliver these essential and beneficial services.

We are currently looking for Trustees who can bring extra skills and experience to our Board, together with commitment and enthusiasm.  We are particularly interested in experience or a background in any of the following areas:

  • ·         Older people and social care
  • ·         Human resources
  • ·         Fundraising
  • ·         Legal
  • ·         Marketing and digital communications
  • ·         Business Management and planning

As a trustee you will be part of a small and friendly team who are collectively responsible for making decisions about the strategic direction of the charity and its activities.  A Trustee would normally take the lead on a particular aspect of our responsibilities, and you will have opportunities to adapt, broaden and develop your skills. This is a fascinating way for you to contribute to your local community or a cause you really care about.

If you have the commitment and enthusiasm for the aims of the charity and a passion to make a difference to the lives of older people, we would love to hear from you.

What skills do I need?

·         An understanding of the needs of older people

·         A willingness to participate in discussion and challenge others

·         The ability to work effectively as part of a team

·         A strong commitment to CHEER’s aims and objectives

·         Effective communication skills

·         Good strategic vision and creative thinking

·         The ability to exercise good, independent judgement

·         Empathy and a passion for improving the lives of older people
