Make a difference for dads, babies and families in your community.

Dads matter – but too often they feel left out or overlooked in the perinatal period. By volunteering with Dad Matters, you can help us change that. Spend time chatting with new and expectant dads in hospital, often in the Scan Clinic. You’ll help dads feel acknowledged and informed, give them space to ask questions, and let them know about the support available through Dad Matters and other local services.

Whether you’re a dad yourself, have lived experience, or simply want to support others, your time and presence can make a powerful difference. Our volunteers help dads feel listened to, supported and more confident in their role – which supports healthier outcomes for babies and families.

This role is flexible and can fit around your schedule, with as little as 2 hours a month making an impact.

What skills do I need?

Skills we are looking for:

Interpersonal skills

  • Confidence to speak to new people – approaching strangers in a sensitive environment (like a hospital ward) without being intrusive.
  • Ability to engage in conversation – starting natural, non-awkward chats and keeping them going at the other person’s pace.
  • Active listening – really hearing what someone is telling you and responding appropriately.

Emotional support

  • Curiosity about people’s situations – asking respectful questions and showing genuine interest.
  • Empathy and compassion – understanding how overwhelming new fatherhood or hospital situations can be and responding with warmth rather than judgment.
  • Supportive – offering encouragement, reassurance, or simply being present without trying to fix everything.

Communication style

  • Non-judgmental attitude – dads may come from all backgrounds and circumstances.
  • Clear and calm communication – especially important in high-stress environments.
  • Knowing when to step back – respecting boundaries if someone doesn’t want to engage.

Personal qualities

  • Reliability and consistency – showing up when you say you will.
  • Patience – some conversations take time, others don’t happen at all.
  • Self-awareness – knowing your limits and when to refer someone to professional help.
  • There are no qualifications required to do this role.
