Library Volunteer

The Spike holds a wide variety of books and documents about workhouses and the history of Guildford and the surrounding area. These are both valuable research materials and of general interest to people who are interested in social history.

We are looking for a volunteer to organise our collection and keep the records updated. There is also a small range of items for sale to visitors which need restocking.

The main tasks are:

Library:

• Initial organisation and setting up of the library
• Creating a library system suitable for The Spike environment and its users.
• Sourcing additional appropriate books
• Indexing and categorising, using a software package if desired, subject to budget.
• Ongoing running and updating.

Shop   

• Sourcing suitable products for sale in a very small space
• Pricing items
• Keeping the shop stocked and updated

What skills do I need?

Experience of keeping a library system is desirable but not essential, and familiarity with standard IT is welcomed. Interest in local history and experience of how to display books and items for sale is also desirable.
