Do you want to make a difference by helping people to reduce household expenses and environmental damage as part of an international movement? Then come and help launch a Repair Café in Banstead to make repair local for all those in and around the area. Happy to work with interested qualified people on timing and commitment level etc.

Repair Café use community repair skills to help people repair and reuse their stuff, without charge, to reduce household costs and reduce waste. Other benefits of the movement include:

    • Bringing back repair into local society

    • Maintaining and spreading repair expertise

    • Promoting social cohesion in the local community by connecting neighbors

You can see more if you search for the main “repaircafe.org” website and there is a collective UK “RepairCafeUK” page on facebook, as well as many local pages.

The intention is to start small and informal as a voluntary association engaged in the social venture of establishing and operating Banstead Repair Café which will initially operate 10 repair sessions per year for up to to 4 hours over the weekend. Positive discussions with local groups suggest we can launch in Spring 2024.

Café success will depend on a wide range of people working in harmony with a few simple procedures and the Administrator is key to achieving this. Learning from other Repair Cafés, it will be important to identify and implement effective processes and systems to schedule the repairs and to match a volunteer repairer with the right skills. Collecting data on the repair work is valuable in understanding the environmental impact and informing future development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify and implement suitable administration processes and systems to smoothly schedule the repair activity with the twin aims of a pleasant and efficient    experience for clients and a rewarding time for volunteers.
  • Identify and implement suitable administration processes for gathering donations.
  • Identify and implement suitable administration processes and systems to capture data on the repair work to support regional and national initiatives.
  • Coaching and training colleagues in the adoption of these systems.
  • Make recommendations regarding the adoption of other policies, processes and systems as needed.
  • Work with members to develop the launch plan.
  • Be primary liaison with our host site for repair events.
  • Jointly manage the budget and expenses.

The intention is to operate the Repair Café sessions for up to 4 hours at a regular time and place in Banstead once per month during the weekend and, especially initially, it will be important for the administrator to engage regularly with these events and in post event reviews to ensure processes are effective. I estimate that weekly catchups will be needed up to launch to review activities etc.
