Do you want to make a difference by helping people to reduce household expenses and environmental damage as part of an international movement? Then come and help launch a Repair Café in Banstead to make repair local for all those in and around the area. Happy to work with interested qualified people on timing and commitment level etc.

Repair Café use community repair skills to help people repair and reuse their stuff, without charge, to reduce household costs and reduce waste. Other benefits of the movement include :

  •  Bringing back repair into local society
  •  Maintaining and spreading repair expertise
  •  Promoting social cohesion in the local community by connecting neighbours

You can see more if you search for the main “repaircafe.org” website and there is a collective UK “RepairCafeUK” page on Facebook, as well as many local pages.

The intention is to start small and informal as a voluntary association engaged in the social venture of establishing and operating Banstead Repair Café which will initially operate 10 repair sessions per year for up to to 4 hours over the weekend. Positive discussions with local groups suggest we can launch in Spring 2024.

We can only launch and grow the Café if we build communication with local communities. The role is to devise and implement a communication plan to support the launch and engage as many local organisations with overlapping interests as possible, particularly those focused on cost of living or environmental and social development goals, so that we can grow both the volunteer and client base. Longer term, the plan will need to engage members to maintain momentum and perhaps consider how we can support community education on related policy matters.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify local media opportunities and implement a communications plan for promoting further volunteering, and for people to make use of the repair sessions. Channels could include local newspapers, church and charity newsletters, magazines, radio stations and social media accounts.
  • Devise simple methods for getting feedback on the effectiveness of different parts of the communication plan to guide future efforts.
  • Make recommendations on how to use resources available from allied organisations to communicate with stakeholders about the wider repair and reuse agenda.

The intention is to operate the Repair Café sessions for up to 4 hours at a regular time and place in Banstead once per month during the weekend and, especially initially, it will be important for the Communication Lead to engage with these events to monitor the plan. I estimate that weekly catchups will be needed up to launch to review activities etc.
