Repair, Mend and DIY Experts for Repair Café

Do you want to make a difference by helping people to reduce household expenses and environmental damage as part of an international movement? Then come and help launch a Repair Café in Banstead to make repair local for all those in and around the area. Repair Café use community repair skills to help people repair and reuse their stuff, without charge, to reduce household costs and reduce waste. Other benefits of the movement include :

    • Bringing back repair into local society
    • Maintaining and spreading repair expertise
    • Promoting social cohesion in the local community by connecting neighbours

You can see more if you search for the main “repaircafe.org” website and there is a collective UK “RepairCafeUK” page on Facebook, as well as many local pages. We are looking for repairers & menders to join our Repair Café and would love you to come and share your skills and expertise in our project. If there is something that you are good at fixing, we can probably match you with great opportunities to share your knowledge and passion with café visitors, and perhaps with fellow volunteers.

Repair Café take on fixing almost every type of household item including;

  • electrical
  • electronic
  • tools & mechanical
  • bikes
  • clothing & textiles
  • toys & wooden items

We are aiming to operate a booking system which should give some advance notice of the items for repair. In general, repairers will need to bring tools with them but help may be available with this.

What skills do I need?

  • Ability to fix / mend stuff that is damaged or broken.
  • Willingness to engage visitors in the repair process.

The intention is to operate the Repair Café sessions for up to 4 hours at a regular time and place in Banstead once per month during the weekend. Optionally, some assessment of the items for repair may be made in advance of the sessions. We are planning to launch the café in May 2024.
