Volunteers play a vital role in improving the patient experience whilst at East Surrey Hospital. Emergency department volunteers assist staff in our busy ED, providing an invaluable service for patients and visitors.

Purpose:

To ensure patients and visitors are made welcome in the Emergency Department. Carry out general duties under the supervision of staff as detailed below.

Volunteer Role:

  • Interact with patients, make refreshments and ensure patients are comfortable
  • Collect notes and files from other departments as required
  • Assist nursing staff with their duties
  • General tidying and cleaning tasks
  • Ensure storeroom/sluice areas are kept clean
  • Restock information leaflets
  • Keep equipment and computers clean if required

Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Sign in/out at the East entrance
  • To inform the volunteer manager should there be a long term period of absence/holiday or in the event that the volunteer wishes to end their role.
  • To at all times maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to the trusts vision and values
  • To undertake MaST training as required by the trust

What skills do I need?

  • Good communication, patient and helpful attitude
  • May involve movement around the hospital so a level of physical fitness is required although all reasonable adjustments will be made.

    Pay travel & parking - car 40p per mile and up to £8 per day bus/travel which is a round trip of 20 miles. Car parking permit issued to volunteers.

    Full trust volunteer induction to include: Fire Safety, Information Governance, Safeguarding, Infection Control. Role specific training will involve tour of the hospital and department, shadowing member of nursing staff and undertaking first few shifts with an experienced volunteer. Role requires Enhanced DBS

Availability Details

We ask that you will volunteer with us for approximately two hours per week, for a minimum of six months. This is mainly because recruitment is a very time consuming and resource intensive procedure but it also means that during this time you will have actually made a difference to our hospital with your help.
